• Environmental Standards and Trade

    26 September 2019

    Dear Constituent,

Thank you for contacting me about environmental standards and the UK’s trade policy.

I firmly believe in protecting both the UK’s vibrant ecosystem and the natural environment worldwide. That is why I welcome the Government’s very clear commitment that future trade agreements must uphold our high environmental standards. Ministers have made clear these standards will not be watered down in pursuit of any trade deal.

Public consultations will be run ahead of any negotiations for new trade agreements, while any final agreement will be scrutinised and ratified by Parliament. These measures will ensure that both Parliament and the public can have their say on the content of any potential new trade agreements, including in the area of environmental standards.

The EU Withdrawal Act makes sure existing EU environmental law continues to have effect in UK law, providing businesses and stakeholders with maximum certainty as we leave the EU. However, the decision to leave the European Union has created an historic opportunity to review our environmental policies. By upholding high environmental standards in any future trade agreements, I am confident we can help fulfil the aim to be the first generation to leave the environment in a better state than we inherited it.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.

    Yours sincerely,

    Mel Stride MP

    MP for Central Devon
