  • MP SUPPORTS NEW PM TO LOOK BEYOND BREXIT AFTER SECURING A DEAL TO LEAVE THE EU

    Mel Stride

CENTRAL DEVON MP Mel Stride has pledged his full support for new Prime Minister Boris Johnson after having initially backed Michael Gove during the Conservative Party leadership contest. Speaking shortly after Mr Johnson was announced as the winner, Mr Stride, who is also the current Leader of the House of Commons, spoke about the importance of uniting behind him to get Brexit done and to move the national focus onto key domestic issues such as education, health, policing and transport.

    Mr Stride said:

“As someone who voted in favour of Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement three times I am as frustrated as anyone that we haven’t yet left the European Union with a deal that will protect our economy, protect our jobs and enable us to strike new trade deals around the world. Clearly this will be the Prime Minister’s number one focus and I certainly hope we will be leaving the EU before 31st October with a deal. There are pressing domestic issues such as the health implications of an ageing population that will require greater social care, improving education funding, recruiting more police officers, tackling climate change and improving public transport. The sooner we can shift Parliament’s focus onto these vital issues the better.”
