  • MP WELCOMES LATEST EMPLOYMENT FIGURES AS WAGE GROWTH CONTINUES TO EXCEED INFLATION

    Mel Stride

CENTRAL DEVON MP Mel Stride has welcomed new figures showing that wage growth has outstripped inflation for the 16th consecutive month and that the number of people in work has reached another record high. Compared to this time last year, unemployment has fallen by 116,000, with the rate falling from 4.2% to 3.8% - the lowest since 1974.

Mr Stride, who served as Financial Secretary to the Treasury until June, when he took up his new role as Leader of the House of Commons, said:

“These are another very good set of employment figures with the last twelve months seeing wages growth rising at the fastest pace for 11 years in cash terms and at the fastest pace for 3 years when inflation is taken into account. The fact that our unemployment rate has remained at the lowest level for 45 years is also very encouraging and means that unemployment has more than halved since the Conservatives took office in 2010.”
