  • MP ARRANGES MINISTERIAL MEETING TO PRESS BANKS TO DO MORE TO PROMOTE POST OFFICE SERVICES

ASHBURTON POSTMASTER Stuart Rogers took a swipe at leading UK banks today when he met with the town’s local Member of Parliament. The branch offers a wide range of day-to-day banking services for both personal and business customers, including paying in and withdrawing cash and cheques or obtaining an account balance. These services are proving increasingly valuable with the closure of local banks.

    Stuart explained:

“With the closure of the banks in our town, the number of residents and businesses using us for their banking needs has increased significantly. But the banks need to do a lot more to promote the services that Post Offices provide. While they encourage their customers to do their banking online, not everything can be done this way - paying in cash or cheques for instance. There are also many older residents who either don’t have a computer or find online services very complicated.”

Backing the call Central Devon MP Mel Stride added that he had secured the agreement of senior Treasury Minister John Glen MP to meet with Mr Rogers to discuss these issues. He said:

“Stuart is absolutely right. Where banks close a local branch, but have a partnership with a local Post Office to offer services on their behalf, they really need to promote that option. Many local residents who were very disappointed when their bank closed have been greatly relieved that they can do their day-to-day banking at the post office instead, but by no means all customers are aware they have this option and are spending time and money travelling to branches in other towns instead of walking to their local post office.”
