JOANNA GILES from Ashburton Post Office today completed a 9-day trip around the UK to raise money for Cancer Research UK and Ashburton Arts. Jo was marking her two-year anniversary with the post office by travelling to the most southerly, westerly, northerly and easterly post offices in the UK with her partner Harry Thuel, with their journey ending at the Houses of Parliament.

There to greet and congratulate them on raising nearly £2,000 so far for two important charities were her local MP Mel Stride and Post Office Minister Andrew Griffiths. Last year Mel and Jo set up a new forum – believed to be a UK first - to promote local post offices and help branches share innovative ideas and best practice. In recent months Mel has joined Jo and Ashburton Sub postmaster Stuart Rogers in calling for banks that close a local branch to better inform their customers about the banking services available at local post offices.

    Jo said:

“I’m really grateful to everyone who has donated and helped raise money for two charities close to my heart. It was very good of Mel to organise the Post Office Minister to meet with me – today has been a great end to a brilliant trip.”

Central Devon MP Mel Stride added:

“Jo has been very much at the heart of the success story of Ashburton Post Office and I was very proud to welcome her to Westminster today and congratulate her and Harry on raising money for two important charities.”

Donations can still be made via Jo’s Just Giving page ( and at Ashburton Post Office.
