  • MP AMONG ATTENDEES AT OPENING AND BLESSING OF NEW OKEHAMPTON CAR PARK

    Mel Stride

CENTRAL DEVON MP Mel Stride attended mass this morning at St Boniface Church in Okehampton. After the service by the Bishop of Plymouth, the Right Reverend Mark O’Toole, Mr Stride spoke at the opening and blessing of the church’s car park and grotto. The car park is now in use after two of years of negotiations with West Devon Borough Council’s Conversation Department over Tree Preservation Orders. The land had previously been described by local residents as a “disused jungle” and an “eye sore” and with limited street parking and increased traffic, the car park finally got the go ahead. It will not only benefit the church congregation but also be available to the wider public.

Speaking after the blessing Mr Stride said:

“I was very proud to be asked to say a few words and announce the car park open. This much-needed car park that has dramatically improved the area, both practically and aesthetically. With the return of a regular passenger service between Okehampton and Exeter coming ever closer, Station Road will be busier and reducing the number of cars parked awkwardly at the bottom of the hill is a welcome move. Credit should go to the church and its congregation along with local councillors for persisting and making this happen.”
