CENTRAL DEVON MP Mel Stride has thanked outgoing Okehampton Mayor Jan Goffey for her “dedication and hard work” during her two years in the role. The pair met on Friday to discuss a number of issues important to the town including the hospital, railway, community transport group and traffic around the supermarkets.

Speaking after their meeting Mr Stride said:

“Jan has put in a huge amount of time and effort into a number of important causes over the past two years. Her dedication and hard work has not gone unnoticed. Jan has been especially vocal in standing up for Okehampton Hospital – an issue we have discussed at length during many meetings – and we will know more about how the local CCG intends to utilise the hospital when a report on this should be published within the next two months. In the meantime I am encouraged that the x-ray machine has been brought back into service and that pre-natal and post-natal services continue to operate from the hospital.”

During their meeting Jan asked Mr Stride to chase Devon Highways on the phasing of the traffic lights by the supermarkets. Mr Stride added:

“Jan is right that traffic as you come out of the supermarkets can be a nightmare at times and I have agreed to write to Devon Highways to ask whether the phasing of the traffic lights could be improved to reduce congestion.”
