  • MP WELCOMES ‘OUTSTANDING’ EMPLOYMENT FIGURES AS WAGES OUTSTRIP INFLATION

    Mel Stride

EMPLOYMENT FIGURES just released by the Office for National Statistics show UK employment has hit a new record high and unemployment remains at its lowest rate since 1975. For the three months to March 2018, unemployment fell by 116,000 and employment rose by 396,000 compared to a year earlier. The South West had the highest employment rate at 79.3% compared to 75.6% nationally – the highest on record. Estimates show average weekly earnings increased by 2.9% for the quarter compared with inflation of 2.5% over the last year.

Welcoming the figures Central Devon MP Mel Stride said:

“These are an outstanding set of figures. For example, youth unemployment has now fallen to 12.1% nearly half the 21.5% we see in France, and overall unemployment in the UK is at 4.2% compared to 8.9% across the channel. The fact that wages are now pushing ahead of inflation is very good news too and mirrors the increasing optimism that I hear from businesses.”
