  • TREASURY MINISTER QUIZZED ON BREXIT CUSTOMS OPTIONS IN SKY INTERVIEW

    Mel Stride

CENTRAL DEVON MP Mel Stride appeared on the Sophy Ridge on Sunday programme yesterday in his capacity as Financial Secretary to the Treasury to discuss the UK’s customs partnership options post Brexit.

Speaking on the show he said:

“A new customs partnership would have a huge advantage in that there would effectively be no customs border between us and the EU 27, which would be very good for the Northern Ireland / Ireland border. The Maximum Facilitation approach would have these borders in place but would use technology to ensure that goods flowed quickly. The PM is right to set up two working groups to drill down into these two options to ensure we have the optimum position to move forward with.”

Mr Stride also spoke about the importance of the UK conducting its own trade arrangements with the rest of the world – something the UK would not be able to do if it remained within the existing EU customs union.
