  • MP HAILS ‘HUGE BENEFITS’ OF BETTER BROADBAND AS SOUTH WEST COVERAGE NEARS 95%

    Mel Stride

CENTRAL DEVON MP Mel has welcomed a report from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport that shows superfast broadband has boosted the turnover of businesses across the UK by £9billion, created 49,000 jobs and reduced both short-term and long-term unemployment. Nationwide superfast broadband coverage has now reached 95.4% due to the Government’s focus on hard to reach areas, with 93.3% of homes and businesses in the South West now having access.

Work is on-going to extend coverage, with more than 1 million extra UK homes and businesses estimated to gain access to superfast speeds over the next few years, taking superfast coverage to 98% of the nation.

    Mr Stride said:

“Rural broadband remains one of the most important issues facing my hugely rural constituency and the South West as a whole. Given the remoteness of much of the region, to be only marginally behind the national average and closing in on 95% coverage is a big step forward, particularly for businesses that rely on a quick internet connection. There is still a lot more to do however, and the Government is continuing to work with broadband providers to reach areas not yet covered.”

Mr Stride has made improving rural broadband coverage one of his top priorities as an MP.
