  • MP WELCOMES JOBS FIGURES SHOWING LOWEST UNEMPLOYMENT SINCE 1975

    Mel Stride

CENTRAL DEVON MP Mel Stride has described jobs figures released today (14/08/18) which show that UK unemployment has fallen to 4% as “extremely positive”. Unemployment, which fell by 65,000 in the three months to June, is now the lowest it has been since 1975.

Mr Stride, who serves as a Government minister in the Treasury Department said:

“The latest figures have exceeded economists’ predictions and also show wages growing at 2.7% - faster than inflation – and a small rise in productivity. There must never be any room for complacency, but these are a very encouraging set of figures that show businesses in the UK are continuing to create jobs. Within the figures it is good to see that the number of people employed on zero-hours contracts has reduced by more than 100,000, giving more people the security of regular hours and a regular pay packet.”
