  • MP WELCOMES EMPLOYMENT FIGURES AS TOTAL UK JOBS HITS RECORD HIGH

    Mel Stride

CENTRAL Devon MP Mel Stride has welcomed new job figures that show that UK employment is at a record high and wages are rising at their fastest pace in a decade. Compared to this time last year, 328,000 more people are in work, bringing the total UK workforce to a record high of 32.53 million. Unemployment fell by 68,000 down to 1.14 million and average weekly earnings increased by 3.4%.

Mr Stride, who serves as Financial Secretary to the Treasury, the third highest ranking minister in HM Treasury, said:

“These are a very encouraging set of figures with more people in work and wages continuing to rise faster than inflation. It is not only the number of jobs being created that is so positive but the nature of these jobs as well with 80% of jobs created since 2010 being full-time and only 2.4% of our workforce now being employed on zero-hour contracts. Looking ahead, it is significant that the number of job vacancies rose slightly as well by 10,000 to a record 853,000. This is a strong indicator that businesses have the confidence to take on new staff and we could see our record high employment increase even further.”
