CHUDLEIGH FILM MAKER Karen Turner received a visit from her local MP today who wanted to congratulate her personally on winning ‘Film the House’ - one of Parliament’s largest competitions. Karen won the award for the The Best Short Film (over 16 category), for The Silent, which is available on Amazon Prime.

The film focuses on two men – 70-year-old Derek Wilkins and 25-year-old Tom Lewis – both victims of male domestic abuse. When Derek stops on his way home to give Tom some much needed advice he sets a terrifying sequence of events in motion. Her impetus for writing The Silent was the discovery that in the West Country we have some of the highest rates of male domestic abuse in the country with three out of four deaths from domestic abuse in Cornwall being male. An issue which she felt often goes ignored and yet the published figures, as shocking as they are, are likely to be just the tip of the iceberg because so many men stay silent. The film starred Olivier award-winning actor, Oliver Ford Davies (Star Wars, Game of Thrones) and Oli Meredith (Netflix's Safe).

Karen wrote to Central Devon MP Mel Stride saying she wanted to enter the competition and after watching the film himself and being moved by its story Mr Stride agreed to promote the film and support its submission.

    Mr Stride said:

“Karen brought to the screen a very difficult but important issue and one I agree doesn’t get the attention it needs. Domestic abuse destroys lives whether the victim is male or female, young or old, and we must understand all the forms it takes in order to stamp it out. I was very pleased to support its submission and was delighted when Karen won her category.”

Film the House aims to raise awareness of the need to protect creativity and copyright by bringing together filmmakers and Parliamentarians and more information is available at
