  • MP ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO SUPPORT INDEPENDENT SHOPS THIS THURSDAY

    Mel Stride

CENTRAL DEVON MP Mel Stride is urging residents to support an initiative to boost trade for independent shops on Thursday 4th July. Independents Day UK is the culmination of a year-round campaign to promote small, independent retail businesses across the country and they are asking anyone who can afford to, to spend £5 in a local independent shop on Thursday, Independents Day. If we were all to do this, independent retailers would benefit to the tune of around £260 million. The campaign is supported by both the Independent Retailers' Confederation and the British Independent Retailers' Association.

    Mr Stride said:

“We are fortunate to have some wonderful market towns across our Central Devon constituency with independent traders accounting for the vast majority of retail outlets. It would be great to see as many residents as possible supporting our independent local businesses, giving them a boost in trade and in turn supporting local job retention and helping us retain the diversity and choice available in our high streets. It would be especially good to see people call in on shops that they have not been to before.”

Research from the Federation of Small Businesses shows that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business, 63p is re-spent in the local area compared to 40p in every £1 spent with a larger business. For more information visit www.independentsdayuk.org
