Mel Stride MP has spoken to pupils at Bovey Primary School about staying safe online. In a pre-recorded video that was played during assembly, Mel talked about how the internet can be an incredibly useful tool, helping to educate and connect people, but that it also carries risks. These include the possibility of accessing information or material that isn’t appropriate, being talked to by people that you don’t know, and having information about you given to other people.
Mel’s message was part of ‘Be Internet Legends’ – a programme developed by Google and Parent Zone which teaches children how to be safer and more confident online. Aimed at seven to 11-year-olds, the programme has evolved to support schools, pupils and families digitally and deliver content remotely.
Mel explained:
“The importance of staying safe online has been highlighted during the last few months as more children have engaged with the internet for online learning and for entertainment because some of their regular activities aren’t accessible. I was very pleased to speak to primary school pupils in Bovey about the internet, digital wellbeing and being both confident and safe online explorers.”
