MID DEVON District Councillors Cathryn Heal (Way) and Clive Eginton (Taw Vale) have welcomed Mel's intervention during transport Parliamentary Questions in the House of Commons yesterday. Mel took the opportunity during a debate on the Government’s ‘Better Bus Scheme’, which has delivered transport improvements in a number of urban centres, to raise the plight of villages in his constituency that either have “no bus services at all” or do have a service but with “very little provision”.
Cllr. Heal, who won a by-election in Way Ward in September to become the youngest councillor at Mid Devon, said:
“I was very pleased to see Mel stand up for our bus services and raise the important issue of rural transport. Isolated communities must not be forgotten and it is frustrating that effort continues to be focused on big towns and cities while villages in Devon like Cheriton Fitzpaine have seen their services cut.”
Cllr. Eginton added:
“I fully appreciate that Devon County Council has its hands tied by funding limitations when it comes to rural transport, but greater investment and targeting from central Government would make a real difference and it was good to see Mel fighting our corner in Westminster”.
