Primary School pupils from Chudleigh Knighton met the village’s local MP today as part of their study into ‘Great British Values’. Key to the topic has been mutual respect for other faiths and beliefs and the importance of democracy. Central Devon MP Mel Stride answered questions on how Parliament passes laws and how Members of Parliament represent their constituency.
Year 5/6 teacher Sarah Twose explained:
“In exploring this topic the children have researched past Prime Ministers, learned about the Houses of Parliament and even held their own mini-election. It was great for Mel to visit the school and speak to the pupils, helping them connect Westminster with our school and community here in Devon.”
Mr Stride added:
“Instilling an interest in our democracy at an early age is hugely important and I was very impressed with how the topic was being taught and how engaged the children have been with it. Tolerance of other religious beliefs is certainly a fundamental British value, as is our democratic political system, which too often we take for granted.”
