Silverton Primary School received a visit today from the village’s MP who wanted to congratulate Head teacher Mr Nickels and his staff on their latest Ofsted Report for 2013 which was good with outstanding features. Central Devon MP Mel Stride, who has 43 Primary Schools within his highly rural constituency, also took the opportunity to discuss aspects of the Government’s education policy such as free school meals for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.
Speaking after his visit Mel said:
“Silverton is a very well-run Primary School with particularly high behavioural standards, which has created an environment where pupils can learn effectively and enjoy themselves. It was good to spend time with Mr Nickels and meet other members of staff and governors who are clearly doing an excellent job.”
Mr Nickels added:
“It was very useful to meet Mel today and discuss how Government policy will affect our school in the future and to provide him with some feedback that he can pass onto the relevant ministers.”
From September all Year 1 and Year 2 pupils in state-funded schools will receive a free school lunch. The government will be providing revenue funding of £450 million in 2014 to 2015 and £635 million in 2015 to 2016 to the Department for Education to fund this commitment.
