Central Devon MP and Leader of the House of Commons Mel Stride has welcomed the Government’s mission for the UK become the first major economy in the world to end its contribution towards global warming after the Prime Minister introduced a new law to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Last year the Government commissioned an independent panel of experts to advise on achieving net zero. After consideration of their report, published in May, the Government has now announced that the UK will legislate to end its contribution to global warming. The UK has reduced emissions faster than any other advanced country in the world, with 2018 the cleanest and greenest year on record. By legislating for net zero, the UK will now aim go even further, phasing out coal power, committing billions of pounds to develop new renewable technologies and creating hundreds of thousands of low carbon jobs.
Mel said:
“The UK already has an excellent record on reducing our carbon footprint – we have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 25% between 2010 and 2018 and last year renewable electricity generation provided 33% of the nation’s energy compared to 6% in 2009. But there is a huge amount more that needs to be done if we are to properly protect our planet for future generations and I am very proud that the UK will become the first first major economy in the world to legislate to end its contribution towards global warming.”
