Mel Stride, MP for Central Devon, has welcomed the Government’s second annual food security summit and the launch of plans which will boost domestic food production and improve food security in the UK.
The plan builds on the measures of support already in place for British farmers and includes the introduction of the first ever UK Food Security Index, which will allow the government to monitor food production across the UK and support the sector to grow more.
Farmers will also be supported to obtain a fair price for their products under new legislation in the egg, fresh produce, and pig sector to enhance fairness and transparency in contracts. A Supply Chain Adjudicator will also be appointed to oversee enforcement of these new measures.
Mr Stride, who attended the summit at Downing Street, said: “Food security is vital to our national security, and we must do all we can to support our farmers to produce the best of British food. I am delighted to see the government acting on matters which have been raised with me by farmers my constituency.”
