Central Devon MP Mel Stride has been out and about locally supporting English Tourism Week, which runs from 15-24 March this year.
Coordinated by VisitEngland, English Tourism Week is an annual celebration of the tourism industry, which provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of domestic tourism and the preservation of our cultural heritage.
This year’s theme is ‘Supporting tourism – the heart of our communities’, recognising the significant impact tourism has on local economies and communities.
The English Tourism sector employees around 2.6 million people and generated £66 billion in domestic visitor spending in 2022, making it a vitally important industry to our economy.
Mel Stride, MP for Central Devon and Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, said: "We are incredibly fortunate in Devon to have access to such fantastic examples of English tourism.”
“It’s history and heritage, tranquil outdoor spaces, and vibrant food and drink scene mean that Central Devon really does have something for everyone.”
“To kick off English Tourism week, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit Powderham Castle.”
Powderham Castle is a fortified manor house situated within the parish and former manor of Powderham. Since 1391, it has been a family home and community landmark, and has over six centuries of history.
Charles Courtenay, the Earl of Devon, owns and operates the Powderham Estate, focusing upon sustainable heritage and land management.
Powderham Castle recently benefitted from the Rural Development Programme for England grant, which funded the opening of their new Welcome Centre. This has enabled Powderham to open year-round due to increased hardstanding and weather proofing of the site.
"It was great to welcome Mel to Powderham," said Charlie, Earl of Devon. "His visit highlights the value of preserving and promoting our historic landmarks, ensuring that future generations can continue to learn about and enjoy their rich history.
“Our new Welcome Centre has also enabled us to better support and increase all-year-round employment, which can typically be very seasonal in the Devon tourism sector.”
