Central Devon MP and Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Mel Stride has visited Immersion in Okehampton to help shine a light on men’s mental health. Founded and run by Okehampton resident Ryan Arthurs, Immersion operates as both a business and a separate Community Interest Company, providing around 20 clubs a week for people of all ages. Their speciality is virtual reality, with 4 state of the art headsets, but they also have a range of traditional board games, an arcade machine and a range of modern consoles. Mel was joined by local Devon County Councillor Lois Samuel.
Ryan explained:
“We aim to be a haven for anyone and everyone, from children struggling with mainstream education to adults who need a bit of escape. We also have helped with simple things like providing free hot meals and spaces for children throughout the winter. The free sessions we are currently providing each week for men with a focus on mental health are proving very popular and will continue to run till July.”
Mel said:
“Just as sports clubs and organisations like the scouts and guides help children to build confidence and self-esteem, so to is Immersion. I suspect in years to come Ryan will prove to have been a pioneer as gaming and Esports continue to grow in popularity. I was particularly interested in the fantastic work Immersion has done to cater for people with disabilities and to shine a light on men’s mental health.”
