Wireless Internet specialist Torbay Telecom, had a visit from its local MP today (01/07/16) to discuss the rollout of superfast broadband in the more rural parts of Devon. The business, founded by local entrepreneur Kevin Morgan and located in Bickington between Ashburton and Newton Abbot, is already providing communities in the Teign Valley with broadband speeds of up to 500mbps.
Mr Morgan was eager to talk about plans to expand his business with Central Devon MP Mel Stride, who has campaigned for better rural broadband coverage since entering parliament in 2010. Only last month Mr Stride raised the issue of broadband speeds within Dartmoor National Park with Business Minister Anna Soubry MP after arranging for her to meet with several local employers in Ashburton. Speaking after the meeting, which was hosted by Teign Valley’s Teignbridge District Councillor Amanda Ford, Mr Stride said:
“75% of my constituents will have access to superfast broadband by the end of the year - a huge step forward for one of the most rural constituencies in England - but I remain concerned about the hardest to reach areas. I am optimistic that wireless technology is the answer and it is very good to see another local business looking to meet that demand.”
Mr Morgan added:
“Wireless technology is the future of broadband provision and is the only financially viable way of providing internet access to rural locations. We very much hope to be part of the team delivering this technology and will be bidding to be chosen as one of Connecting Devon and Somerset’s suppliers later this year.”
