Award-winning Hanlon’s Brewery based near Newton St Cyres has received a visit from the village’s local MP. Owner Dan Taylor gave Central Devon MP Mel Stride a tour of their facilities and discussed some of the issues important to the industry, including excise duty, minimum pricing of alcohol and the regulation of pub companies. The pair also briefed Mr Stride on their future business plans which include ambitious plans for guest accommodation alongside the site.
Mr Taylor said:
“It was very good to meet Mel and give him a tour of our facilities, including our bar and shop. We are excited about our plans for guest accommodation - locals should watch this space!”
Mel, who prior to becoming a Government minister was a vocal backbencher on the issue of excise duty, once delivering a 1,000-strong petition to then Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne on the issue, added:
“The UK now has the most breweries it has had since the 1930s – a really good sign for the industry. But there are always challenges and it was very useful to hear first-hand about the impact that pub closures are having on breweries and discuss minimum pricing of alcohol – an issue the Government is looking closely at.”
