Mel Stride MP was in Manaton today to support Moor Than Meets the Eye. The landscape partnership scheme is bringing communities and organisations together to explore Dartmoor’s past, conserve its wildlife, improve understanding of this rich landscape and develop and share the skills to look after it for generations to come. The scheme covers 280 square km on south east Dartmoor and includes 28 individual projects and many delivery partners. Mr Stride met with the new Chair of Dartmoor National Park Authority Pamela Woods and Chief Executive Kevin Bishop. He also spoke with a some of the project teams and leaders.
Mel, who has a keen interest in history and is a qualified tour guide of some of the UK’s most popular landmarks, said:
“There is nowhere more beautiful in the UK than Dartmoor and Moor Than Meets the Eye is an important initiative doing excellent work in preserving the heritage of our national park. There is a fine balance to strike between bringing the park into the 21st Century in terms of infrastructure and affordable housing while fully maintaining its unique character and history. The emphasis on wildlife conservation is particularly important and I was delighted to learn that in the past couple of years the scheme has started offering apprenticeships specifically aimed at helping young people develop the skills and experience to start a career in heritage conservation.”
