Mel Stride MP has today visited a village in his constituency that suffered badly during the heavy flooding in November 2012 to inspect its new flood defences. Mel visited Kennford near Exeter to see the improvements that are being made and was impressed with what he saw.
“The improvements being carried out in Kennford are essential and now close to completion. I am very pleased that the Government has recognised the importance of investing in flood defence schemes in Devon to protect at-risk towns and villages” said Mr Stride. “The horrendous flooding in 2012 displaced many people from their homes and it is only right that the proper defences are being built to ensure the village is firmly protected against future events.”
Joining Mr Stride was local Teignbridge Councillor John Goodey also welcomed the announcement:
“I’m very pleased for both Kennford and Kenn that this work is now coming to completion. Residents in both villages need to feel safe during periods of heavy rain and the new defences will give residents that important peace of mind.”
Mr Stride’s Central Devon constituency was one of the most badly affected areas of the country in 2012, prompting the Prime Minister to visit Buckfastleigh and the Environment Minister to visit Kennford. In the aftermath of the flooding Mel spoke frequently in the House of Commons about the need for greater investment in flood defences and action from the Government to tackle the issue of residents in high-risk areas not being able to secure appropriate insurance.
