Mel Stride MP is urging his constituents to listen to the advice of our leading scientists and doctors about the benefits of Covid-19 vaccines rather than anti-vac conspiracy theories circulating on social media and the internet.
His appeal follows the significant progress being made by the University of Oxford in developing a vaccine that stops people developing Covid-19 symptoms. The latest research indicates their jab is up to 90% effective, while also being cheaper, easier to store and easier to transport, than the vaccines being development by Pfizer and Moderna. There are four million doses of the Oxford vaccine in the UK which will start to be administered as soon as the regulator gives its final approval, and the Government has ordered another 100 million.
Mr Stride said:
“Throughout the pandemic one of the challenges we have faced is from a minority of people who haven’t taken Covid-19 seriously, believing it to be some kind of hoax, and we are sadly seeing similar conspiracy theories around a vaccine. Like other kinds of fraud, conspiracy theorists often target the most vulnerable, are often very convincing, and may end up putting that fraction of a doubt in someone’s mind against getting vaccinated. When vaccinations are rolled out, please listen to our scientists and doctors and if you decide to undertake more research look carefully at the sources of information you are reading.”
